Dr. Tom Waller is a sports scientist and currently leads lululemon’s Whitespace R&D team.
His expertise centres on innovation in sports apparel, applying psychophysiology to product development by linking technology, science and human behaviour. He has shared his unique views on innovation and its influence on human behaviour at various global conferences and forums.
Tom has built a formidable career in sports science and innovation, having completed his PhD at Loughborough and becoming Head of R&D at Loughborough spin-out company Progressive Sports Technologies. He then went to Speedo to become Head of Aqualab – the company’s R&D and innovation facility – and led new product and fabric development for all Olympic elite swimming projects. He also has experience working with the NBA, and the British Triathlon, Cycling and Paralympic teams.
At lululemon, Tom is focussed on driving product innovation, leading a team of neuromechanics scientists, former NASA scientists, polymer scientists and technologists, in what they call a Whitespace laboratory. His team at lululemon has pioneered the “Science of Feel,” which draws on psychophysiology to focus the company’s product R&D on ensuring that the primary lens through which they design new clothes is how the brain responds to the sensation they create when being worn.
